INDIVIDUALS
PART TWO
The following stories are about individual residents of Spartanburg District during the Civil War. The tales provide insight into the impact of war on even the smallest of communities, whether the sites of battles or not. People make history and historians largely deal with people in the aggregate, for the national and regional narrative is the sum of the actions and reactions of individuals. Here the focus is on some of the more compelling individual components of Spartanburg's overall story, which humanize and enhance its larger narrative.
These narratives, whether their endings are known or unknown, happened and deserve to be told: the plight of a slave suffering the terrors of the institution into which she was born, the struggle of a war widow managing her husband's farm operation under arduous circumstances, the animosity and unforeseen violence of public accusations of treason, and the trauma of having to leave a comfortable way of life for relative poverty and an alien social world. All were part of the complexity of wartime Spartanburg District.
War is devastating for those on the battlefield and those at home. For the residents of Spartanburg during the Civil War the impact missed almost no one, no matter how far removed they were from battle or how loyal they were to the new nation. Their stories reflect the delicate bedrock of the Confederacy.
